Ultramarine Hat to Crochet

What is more fun than a scarf crochet a long? One for matching hats! here is the Ultramarine Hat to match my last post with the Ultramarine Scarf!

Finished Size: Adult medium – fits head size 20” – 22” comfortably

 

Materials:

 

1 skein King Cole Autumn Chunky (80% acrylic/20% wool; 153 yds; 100 g) in Morning Dew #5253 (there was enough leftover to make the fringe on the Ultramarine Scarf!)

Crochet hook size L/11/8.00mm or size needed to obtain gauge

Locking stitch marker

 

 

Gauge: 14 sts x 7 rows = 4”/10cm in pattern st

 

Abbreviations:

 

Blo – back loop only

Ch – chain

Rep – repeat

Rnd – round

Sc – single crochet

Sk – skip

Sl st – slip stitch

St(s) – stitch(es)

 

Hat:

Brim:

Ch 6, leaving a longer than normal tail at the beginning for finishing later.

 

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 5 sc

Row 2: Scblo in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

 

Rep Row 2 for pattern until work measures 20” – 22” or desired circumference when slightly stretched. Do not end off.

 

Side:

Join Brim into a circle by aligning cast on edge with last row stitched and working a sl st joining the two rows.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 51 sc evenly spaced around. Join rnd with sl st in first sc. 51 sc

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 3 sc in first sc, place marker in the second of those 3 sc,  *sk 2 sc, 3 sc in next sc. Rep from * around, 2 sc will remain unworked. Do not join rnd, the marker will denote beginning of rnd. 17 3-sc groups.

Rnd 3: 3 sc in marked st, move marker to the second of those 3 sc, *sk 2 sc, 3 sc in next sc. Rep from * around, 2 sc will remain unworked.

Rep Rnd 3 for pattern until work measures 6” or desired height from bottom edge.

 

Crown Decreases:

Rnd 1: 3 sc in marked sc, move marker to the second of those 3 sc, * sk 2 sc, sc in next sc, sk 2 sc, 3 sc in next sc. Rep from * around to end. 8 2-sc groups + 9 3-sc groups.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in marked sc, move marker to the second of those 2 sc, *sk 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sk 1 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around to end. 17 2-sc groups

Rnd 3: 2 sc in marked sc, move marker to the second of those 2 sc, *sk 1 sc, sc in next sc, sk 1 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around to end. 8 sc + 9 2-sc groups

Rnd 4: Sc in marked sc, move marker to that sc, *sc in next sc, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc. Rep from. Around to end. 17 sc

Rnd 5: Sc in marked sc, *sc2tog, rep from * around to end. End off leaving a long tail for finishing. 9 sc

 

Finishing:

Thread the tail from the last rnd onto a tapestry needle. Weave it in and out of the last 9 sts, pull tight to close up the top of the hat, then finish off.

 

Use tail from beginning to sew up the brim.

 

Weave in all ends.
