Adjustable Yoga Mat Strap to Crochet

This adjustable strap, perfect for carrying your yoga mat to and from class or your rolled up beach towels at the beach, is super easy to make, using only single crochet and chain stitches and a thick T-shirt yarn.

It is perfect for carrying anything rolled and adjusts to accommodate a wide range of sizes.

Finished Size: Mine is 2 ½ ” wide x 58” long not including the rings. I used up all the yarn in the kit but I am also 5’10” – if you are shorter you might want to end before I did. I expect the strap will stretch out a bit with wear as well.

Materials:

Approximately 275g/60 yds cotton or cotton/poly t-shirt yarn

Crochet hook size M/10.00mm or size to work comfortably. T-shirt yarn is notoriously hard on your hands so make a firm fabric but watch your joints!

Two wooden rings, 3” or a bit larger

Yarn needle with a large eye

Abbreviations:

Ch – chain

Rnd – round

Sc – single crochet

Sl st – slip stitch

Yoga Mat Strap:

Rings: Make 2:

Beginning with a slip knot on your hook, work 20 sc in wooden ring, crocheting over the tail to help secure it. Join rnd with sl st in first sc. End off first ring and set aside, ch 1, turn and do not end off second ring.

NOTE: If you are not getting enough coverage with 20 sc it is fine to add more, just make note of how many you add to the first ring so you can make the same number for the second ring.

Continuing on with second Ring:

Row 1: Sc in each of next 4 sc. Ch 1, turn. 4 sc

NOTE: If you want a more narrow strap (or a much longer one for the same amount of yarn) it is fine to work in 3 sc instead of 4. You will not want to go wider though or the strap won’t move easily through the rings.

Row 2: Sc in each sc. Ch 1, turn.

Rep Row 2 for pattern until work measures 58” long or desired size, or you are just about out of yarn. Do not ch 1 on final row, end off.

Assembly:

This is the moderately tricky bit – watching the video helps!

With right side of the wooden ring facing up, pass the end of the strap from back to front through its attached wooden ring without twisting.

Pass the end of the strap through the second wooden ring from front to back without twisting, matching the orientation of the first wooden ring (see photo).

With tail from the strap, whip stitch the 4 sc of your final row to any 4 consecutive sc on the ring.

Weave in final tails.

THE KIT!

While supplies last I have a kit available in my store. You can choose from several different colors, and the full kit includes 275g of cotton/poly t-shirt yarn (unsure of exact percentages as these are from a huge lot of unlabeled yarn I recently acquired but mostly cotton), 2 wooden rings approximately 3”, 1 aluminum crochet hook size 10.00mm, and a printed pattern with a few helpful step by step photos. The only things you will then need are a good pair of scissors and a yarn needle with a large eye.

And now the video!
