The perfect transitional hat and cowl for between the seasons, this lovely, lacy set provides just enough warmth with plenty of visual interest. Knit it in a silk blend as shown in the photo, or some soft cotton blend to add to its delicate appearance. You can get both projects out of under 300 yards of luscious yarn so you get a lot of bang for your buck!

Finished Size:
Hat – Approximately 20” (22”) in circumference at picot hem, aggressively blocked (see note); approximately 6” in height from bottom of hem to start of crown; laid flat, 9” tall at center/tallest point.
Cowl – 25” in circumference x 7” tall
Materials:
274 yds DK weight (CYCA 3, Light) yarn for both projects.
16” circular knitting needle size 4/3.5mm or size needed to obtain gauge
Stitch marker
Tapestry needle
Gauge:
16 sts and 12 rows = 4” in lace pattern after blocking
Note:
While it looks like there is a discrepancy in the gauge between the hat and the cowl, I blocked the picot hem of the hat much more than the picot hems of the cowl. I wanted the hat brim to snap back for a snug fit without ribbing or elastic – the cowl hems do not need to be so snug.
Abbreviations:
k – knit
k2tog – knit 2 together
sk2p – sl 1, k2tog, pass slipped st over knit st sl – slip
st – stitch
yo – yarn over
Lace Pattern
Worked in the round, multiple of 4 sts
Rnd 1: *K2, k2tog, yo. Rep from * around. Rnds 2, 4, 6: Knit.
Rnd 3: *Yo, sk2p, yo, k1. Rep from * around. Rnd 5: *K2tog, yo, k2. Rep from * around. Rnd 7: Remove beg-of-rnd marker, sl 1 st from left needle to right, replace marker. *K1, yo, sk2p, yo. Rep from * around.
Rnd 8: Knit to last st, sl 1 st from left needle to right, remove marker, replace slipped st on left needle, replace marker.
Rep Rnds 1-8 for pattern.
Hem
Rnds 1-7: Knit.
Rnd 8 (Picot Rnd): *K2tog, yo. Rep from * around.
Rnds 9-15: Knit.
Hat
Brim
With circular needle cast on 64 (72) sts. Place marker and join to work in the round.
Work Rnds 1-15 of Hem.
Hat Body
Work Rnds 1-8 of lace pattern a total of 7 times.
Crown Shaping
Rnd 1: *K2tog, k2tog, yo. Rep from * around. 48 (54) sts.
Rnd 2: Knit to last st, sl 1 st from left needle to right, remove marker, replace sl st on left nee- dle, replace marker.
Rnd 3: *Sk2p, yo. Rep from * around. 32 (36) sts.
Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 2.
Rnd 5: *K2tog. Rep from * around. 16 (18) sts. Rnd 6: Knit.
Rnd 7: *K2tog. Rep from * around. 8 (9) sts.
Cut yarn leaving a 10” tail, thread tail into tap- estry needle, thread through 8 (9) remaining stitches and pull tight. End off.
Cowl
With circular needle cast on 100 sts. Place marker and join to work in the round.
Work Rnds 1-15 of Hem.
Work Rnds 1-8 of lace pattern a total of 5 times.
Work Rnds 1-15 of Hem.
Bind off loosely.
Finishing
Fold Brim and both Cowl hems to WS at Picot Rnd and sew into place.
Weave in all ends.
Wet block to desired dimensions.
