Coterie Circular Bag to Crochet

I have sewn circular bags like this but wanted to try a crochet one! Perfect for carrying a small craft project or your suncreen keys and wallet for a day out, the Coterie bag is a simple center out circle with a tab finish. Don’t worry about weaving in ends – my video on finishing the tab top means you can make the entire bag in one strand of yarn, leaving only one end at the beginning and one at the end!

Coterie is part of the BagtastiCAL Crochet Along sponsored by CAL Central. Check out this post on Underground Crafter to read more about it.

Materials:

Approximately 300 yds sport weight (CYCA 2, Sport) cotton yarn. Model shown in Circulo Whoopee (100% Mercerized Brazilian Virgin Cotton/ 200g/ 578 yds) in color 9883

Crochet hook size E/3.5mm or size needed for a firm fabric

Approximately 3.5 yards 3/8″ wide double faced satin ribbon (or see Note)

Yarn needle with a large eye

Gauge: Not critical for this pattern but you want a firm fabric because cotton can stretch with use. I got 18 sts x 15 rows in pattern stitch (2 rnds sc, 1 rnd dc)

Notes:

Ch-3 counts as 1 dc at beg of rnd.

You can make long chains for the drawstrings instead of using ribbons but I find the ribbons flow more smoothly through the tabs.

Top Edging and Tabs:

This is a little bit fiddly and I encourage you to watch the video but if you can do it it saves you from having to weave in a million ends.

Rnd 1 and only: Continuing on with RS facing, ch 1, sc in first sc and each of the next 4 sc. *(Ch 1, turn. Sc in each of last 5 sc across) 11 times, so you end with a WS row. Fold the tab towards the RS/side facing you, take the working yarn to the back around the right-side edge and surface crochet each of these 5 sts to the tops of the 5 dc you worked in by inserting your hook into the next sc and its companion dc, with yarn in back, yo and draw through the work and the loop on your hook, across. Sc in each of next 21 dc. Rep from * around, noting on the last repeat there will only be 16 dc to sc into at the end of the repeat. Join rnd with sl st in first sc. End off. Weave in ends.

Cut two pieces of ribbon 60” long. Fold bag in half and thread each piece of ribbon through all of the tabs, beginning on opposite sides. Knot the ends of the ribbon and cut on an angle. Pull on both knots to gather up your bag.
