Crochet Preemie Cocoon and Hat Pattern – Orange You Glad I’m Here

This sweet crochet preemie cocoon with matching preemie hat is simple to crochet in the round, with double crochet stitches separated into segments by front post treble stitches. Don’t fancy an orange? Use green for lime, yellow for lemon, or any color you like to just admire the texture without the citrus theme!

Finished Sizes:

Cocoon – 15” in circumference x 15” tall

Hat – 12” in circumference x 4” crown height

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn (CYCA 4, Medium) in winter white and orange. Model shown in Big Twist Value (100% acrylic; 380 yds; 6 oz), 1 skein each White (A) and Bright Orange (B)

Crochet hook size H/8/5.00mm or size needed to obtain gauge

6 yarn bobbins

Tapestry needle

Gauge:

11 sts x 7 rows = 4” in dc

Notes:

Ch-3 counts as 1 dc.

Ch-4 counts as 1 dc + ch-1.

I used a bobbin for each iteration of A after the first rnd, I used only the one working strand of B and just let it pass behind the front post sts on the wrong side of the work.

Cocoon:

Wind A onto 6 large bobbins. I made each bobbin 15 yds and had plenty of leftover.

With A, make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 11 dc in ring. Join rnd into top pf beg-ch-3. 12 dc

Rnd 2: With B, sl st into next dc, ch 3, dc in same dc, with new bobbin of A, FPtr in next dc, (with B, 2 dc in next dc, with new bobbin of A, FPtr in next dc) 5 times. With B, join rnd with sl st in first dc. 12 dc in B, 6 FPtr in A

Rnd 3: With B, ch 3, dc in same dc, 2 dc in next dc, with A, FPtr in next FPtr, (with B, 2 dc in each of next 2 dc, with A, FPtr in next FPtr) 5 times. With B, join rnd with sl st in first dc. 24 dc in B, 6 FPtr in A

Rnd 4: With B, ch 3, dc in same dc, dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, with A, FPtr in next FPtr, (with B, 2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, with A, FPtr in next FPtr) 5 times. With B, join rnd with sl st in first dc. 36 dc in B, 6 FPtr in A

Rnd 5: With B, ch 3, dc in each of next 5 dc, with A, FPtr in next FPtr, (with B, dc in each of next 6 dc, with A, FPtr in next FPtr) 5 times. With B, join rnd with sl st in first dc.

Rep Rnd 5 for pattern until work measures 13 ½” tall. Join final rnd with A; end off B.

Top Edging:

Rnd 1: With A, ch 1, sc in each st around. Join rnd with sl st in first sc. 42 sc

Rnd 2: Ch 4, sk 1 sc, dc in next sc, * ch 1, sk 1 sc, dc in next sc. Rep from * around, ch 1. Join rnd with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-ch-4. 21 dc + 21 ch-1 sps

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st as rnd join, sc around working 1 sc in each dc and each ch-1 sp. Join rnd with sl st in first sc. Change to B; end off A.

Rnd 4: With B, ch 1, sc in same st as rnd join and in each sc around. Join rnd with sl st in first sc. End off.

Drawstring:

With A, chain for approximately 50”. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. End off.

Finishing:

Weave in all ends.

Weave drawstring in and out of ch-1 sps in Rnd 2 of Top Edging.

Hat:

Work instructions for Cocoon through Rnd 3.

Rnd 4: With B, ch 3, dc in each of next 3 dc, with A, FPtr in next FPtr, (with B, dc in each of next 4 dc, with A, FPtr in next FPtr) 5 times. With B, join rnd with sl st in first dc. 24 dc in B, 6 FPtr in A

Rnds 5 – 6: Rep Rnd 4. Change to A for final rnd join.

Rnd 7: With A, ch 1, sc in same st as rnd join and in each st around. Change to A, join rnd in first sc. 30 sc

Rnd 8: With B, ch 1, sc in same st as rnd join and in each st around. Join rnd in first sc. End off.
