Easy Knit Scarf Pattern for Beginners

This free pattern for an easy knit scarf for beginners started life as the Bisectional Scarf, which I designed when I was appearing on Hochanda TV in the UK a few years back. I wanted something that even entry level knitters could make while using the luscious worsted weight yarn from Zen Yarn Garden.

Free Knit Pattern East Striped Garter Stitch Scarf with Fringe 1

The scarf is knit flat from side to side, all in knit stitch which leaves a striped pattern on one side and a more multi-colored pattern on the other. The fringe is created as you knit, making finishing a snap, and there are NO ends to weave in – which might be the very best part!

Finished Size: 88”/223.5 cm x 6”/15cm, excluding fringe

Materials:

Three coordinating skeins Zen Yarn Garden Serenity Worsted (100g/160m; 75% merino wool/15% cashmere/10%polyamide). Label each one A, B or C.

Circular knitting needle 29”/73.5cm in length or longer, size 7/4.5mm. Achieving gauge is not critical for this pattern. Scarf is knit flat but the length of the circular needle is required to accommodate the large number of stitches.

Gauge: 14 sts x 28 rows = 4”/10cm in garter st. Gauge not critical for this pattern as long as you have a pleasing fabric.

NOTE: Knit the first st of every row beginning with Row 2 as follows:
K2togfb – knit two together front and back – knit 2 sts together, do not push off left hand needle, knit 2 together through back loops of those same 2 sts, push off left hand needle.

Abbreviations:

K – knit

Rep – repeat

Scarf:

With A, cast on 308 sts with long tail or similar cast on.

Row 1: With A, knit, drop A, but do not end off.

Row 2: With B, leaving a yarn tail at the beginning at least 8”/20.5cm long, k2togfb, knit across.

Row 3: K2togfb leaving a loop of yarn at least 8”/20.5cm long, knit across. Drop working yarn but do not end off.

Rows 4 – 5: With C, rep Rows 2 – 3.

Rows 6 – 7: With A, rep Row 3 twice.

Continue on in pattern as established, leaving a 8”/20.5cm loop at the beginning of each row, beginning each row with a k2togfb, and changing colors after every 2 rows, until work measures 6”/15cm when slightly stretched, or you are nearly out of yarn. Bind off in last color used.

Finishing:

Cut each loop of yarn at beginning and end of rows evenly in the middle so there are strands hanging instead of loops.
Divide strands into 5 equal or almost equal groups (mine had one extra strand so I incorporated it into the center group) and tie each group in an overhand knot near the knitted edge of the fabric.
Lay fringed end out on a flat surface, make sure all of the strands are untangled, and cut straight across to make sure all tied strands are the same length.
