Garter Stitch Rib Beanie

This quick and easy knit in fingering weight shows off a hand-dyed yarn perfectly! The garter stitch rib pattern is a great one to have in your bag of tricks, and makes a squishy soft fabric with a lot of elasticity so the hat will fit a wide range of sizes!

Materials:

175 yds fingering weight yarn (CYCA 1, Superfine). Model shown used one skein of Koigu KPPPM – not sure the colorway number but just pick one you like!

16” circular needles size 3/3.25mm
Or size needed to obtain gauge

Optional: DPNs size 3/3.25mm for crown decrease, or same size as circular needle. Alternatively you can use magic loop or two circulars – your choice!

Stitch marker

Gauge: 20 sts and 28 rows = 4″/10cm in garter stitch rib

Finished size: 20″/51cm circumference
, unstretched. Will accommodate a head circumference up to 23″/58cm

Hat:

Cast on 100 sts and join for working in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Place marker for beg of rnd.

Work in st st (k every rnd) until work measures 1.5” from cast-on edge, for rolled brim.

Main Section:

Rnd 1: *K 2, p 2. Rep from * to end.

Rnd 2: K around.

Rep Rnds 1–2 for pattern until hat measures 9” from cast-on edge, including rolled brim, ending with a Rnd 1.

Crown:

Note: When number of stitches becomes too small to comfortable work on the circular needle, you can switch to DPNS, use the magic loop technique, or grab a second circular!

Rnd 1: K 1, ssk, (k 18, ssk) 4 times, k to end of rnd. 95 sts

Rnd 2: *K 1, ssk, (k 2, p 2) 4 times. Rep from * around. 90 sts

Rnd 3: K 1, ssk, (k 16, ssk) 4 times, k to end of rnd. 85 sts

Rnd 4: *K 1, ssk, p 2, (k 2, p 2) 3 times. Rep from * around. 80 sts

Rnd 5: K 1, ssk, (k 14, ssk) 4 times, k to end of rnd. 75 sts

Rnd 6: *K 1, ssk, (k 2, p 2) 3 times. Rep from * around. 70 sts

Rnd 7: K 1, ssk, (k 12, ssk) 4 times, k to end of rnd. 65 sts

Rnd 8: *K 1, ssk, p 2, (k 2, p 2) 2 times. Rep from * around. 60 sts

Rnd 9: K 1, ssk, (k 10, ssk) 4 times, k to end of rnd. 55 sts

Rnd 10: *K 1, ssk, (k 2, p 2) 2 times. Rep from * around. 50 sts

Rnd 11: K 1, ssk, (k 8, ssk) 4 times, k to end of rnd. 45 sts

Rnd 12: *K 1, ssk, p 2, k 2, p 2. Rep from * around. 40 sts

Rnd 13: K 1, ssk, (k 6, ssk) 4 times, k to end of rnd. 35 sts

Rnd 14: *K 1, ssk, k 2, p 2. Rep from * around. 30 sts

Rnd 15: K 1, ssk, (k 4, ssk) 4 times, k to end of rnd. 25 sts

Rnd 16: *K 1, ssk, p 2. Rep from * around. 20 sts

Rnd 17: K 1, ssk, (k 2, ssk) 4 times, k to end of rnd. 15 sts

Rnd 18: *K 1, ssk. Rep from * around. 10 sts

When Rnd 18 is completed, cut the yarn leaving at least a 10” tail.

Thread the yarn tail on a tapestry needle, thread the needle through all ten remaining stitches and pull tight to close.

Weave in ends, block if desired.
