Purple Plaid Afghan Square

I have a thing for plaids – knit, crochet, stitched in designs, surface embellished – I just love plaids!

So here’s a pattern for a single crochet block that you can use either as part of a larger project, or that you can make an entire throw out of which extends the plaid pattern out in all directions!

Welcome to all the Moogly CAL participants – this is Block #6 of 2018!

This one is crocheted in the intarsia method, which means there are a fair few ends to weave in but the stitching is neat, the fabric thickness is consistent throughout, and it looks terrific on both sides.

Purple Plaid Square

Red Heart With Love Solids – 1 skein each #1101 Eggshell (A), #1538 Lilac (B), and #1542 Aubergine (D)

Red Heart With Love Multi – 1 skein #1816 Waterlily ( C)

Crochet hook size J/10/6.00mm or size needed to obtain gauge

Gauge: 11 sts x 13 rows = 4”/10cm in sc

Finished size: 12” square with 3 Rnd edging

Note: The version with the three round solid edging is for a 12″ square meant to stand alone as part of a multi-square project; to extend the plaid pattern for a throw you’d need a one round sc edging in three colors (A, B and C) in which the sc of the edging matches the colors of the edge of the square.

Always use the new color for the last yarn over of the last stitch in the old color.

Square:

With A ch 4, with B ch 7, with C ch 7, with B ch 7, with A ch 5. EDITED TO ADD – this is a great place to use foundation single crochets if you are so inclined – if you do, go right to Row 2.

Row 1: With A, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 3 ch, with B sc in each of next 7 ch, with C sc in each of next 3 ch, ch 1, sk 1 ch, sc in each of next 3 ch, with B sc in each of next 7 ch, with A sc in each of next 4 ch. Ch 1, turn. 28 sc + ch-1 sp

Rows 2 – 4: With A sc in each of next 4 sc, with B sc in each of next 7 sc, with C sc in each of next 3 sc, ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in each of next 3 sc, with B, sc in each of next 7 sc, with A, sc in each of last 4 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 5: Rep Row 4 to end, change to B, ch 1, turn.

Rows 6 – 13: With B sc in each of next 4 sc, with D sc in each of next 7 sc, with C sc in each of next 3 sc, ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in each of next 3 sc, with D sc in each of next 7 sc, with B sc in each of next 4 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 14: Rep Row 6 to end, change to C, ch 1, turn.

Rows 15 – 21: With C sc in each sc to ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in each sc to end. Ch 1, turn.

Row 22: Rep Row 15 to end, change to B, ch 1, turn.

Rows 23 – 30: Rep Row 6.

Row 31: Rep Row 6 to end, change to A, ch 1, turn.

Rows 32 – 36: Rep Row 2. End off after Row 36.

Surface detail:

First Half: With D, beginning at bottom center ch-1 sps, work column of surface crochet chain up to center of square, turn work counter clockwise, continue surface crochet chain along top of Row 18 to edge of work. End off.

Second Half: With D, working from top center down in ch-1 sps, work column of surface crochet chain to center of square, turn work counter clockwise, continue surface crochet chain along top of Row 18 to end of work. End off.

Edging: With A, work 3 rnds sc, placing 3 sc in each corner. End off.

Weave in all ends.
