Sew a Popcorn Pouch (with Puppies!)

The popcorn pouches are so called because much like a bag of microwave popcorn, they are pleated on the side and expand when filled. To me they are like popcorn because once I get started making them I can’t leave them alone! This one has adorable puppies.

Materials:

Finished Size: 5” wide x 8” tall

9” tall by 18” wide outer fabric (note you can change the size of your pouch by changing the size of your rectangle, just make sure it is twice as wide as it is tall)

9” x 18” lining fabric

2 pieces 2” tall x 6” wide lining fabric for binding (note if you change the size of your pouch you will need to change the width of the binding too!

9” x 18” light to medium weight fusible interfacing

Nylon zipper 9” long or longer

Optional: Zipper stop and pliers

Assembly:

Fuse interfacing to wrong side of lining fabric.

Unzip the zipper and make a “sandwich” with the right side of the outer fabric facing up, the right side of one half of the zipper facing down, and the right side of the lining fabric facing down. Stitch.

Checking the video helps here!

Turn right side out, press, and top stitch.

Set the other half of the zipper the same way.

Optional: Install a zipper stop.

Hard press the assembled tube flat with the zipper on the top/center and a fold on either side.

Press each side fold in towards the zipper ending about 1/2” away from the zipper teeth. Use your ruler or tape measure to see that the top and bottom of the pouch measures 5” in width.

Unfold and re-fold so that on each side, the outermost fold line goes toward the inside between the layers, and the top and bottom fold lines meet. Hard press.

On each the right side of each short edge, clip or pin a piece of binding with right sides facing down and the seam allowances folded towards the wrong side. Stitch.

Unfold each binding piece and press, pressing the seam allowances on the short sides under.

Fold the long side so its raw edge meets the raw edges of the pouch, then fold again towards the pouch. Press, then clip or pin into place.

Stitch each binding into place, starting on one short side, stitching in the ditch across the pouch, then up the other side.

Trim your threads and you are all finished!

  1. You said at the beginning to cut the height twice the size of the width, but in the video you said to cut them 9 by 12. Which is correct?
Thank you. I enjoyed your video.

  2. Love this pouch, it looks fun, easy and fast to make. I intend to head to my sewi g room right away and begin. Thanks for sharing 🪡🧵

FYI, I noticed an error , when the fabric measurements were given as 9X12″ instead of 9X18″ in the tutorial. However it was clearly stated that the width should be double the height. The information is also correct in the written instructions.
