Trifolium Crochet Square – You’ve Got Options CAL

This post is part of a fun CAL in which participating designers give you a pattern in which you can make a 6″ or a 12″ square.

Mine is the Trifolium Square, so named because I think the center looks a tiny bit like a clover!

Made from the center out in three colors of worsted weight yarn, it’s embellished with surface crochet.

Trifolium Square is part of the You’ve Got Options 2020 CAL/Crochet A Long. There are tons of patterns and wonderful giveaways so click here or on the photo at the end of the post to find out how you can play along!

Add it to your queue or favorites on Ravelry, or purchase an ad-free PDF!

Surface Crochet Line 1

For a 12″ square you can do this now or add it in later!

With C, starting in any side stitch, work horizontal surface crochet in top of each stitch of Rnd 3. See video if you need a tutorial. When you come to the corner ch-2 sp, work a surface crochet stitch in the space, then in the space above of Rnd 4, then another in the space of Rnd 3, then move on to the next st.

When you come to the end of the rnd, cut C leaving a tail of about 6″. Thread the tail through the tapestry needle and bring it up through the work to the top, insert the needle under both loops of the first surface stitch, then put the needle back down where it came up. Weave those ends in on the wrong side.

6″ square is now done!

Square: Large Size Only:

Rnd 5: Join C with a sl st in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 5, 3 dc in same ch-2 sp, [sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, sk 2 dc, shell in next dc, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, sk 1 dc, shell in next dc, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, sk 2 dc, shell in next dc, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, sk 1 dc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, sk 2 dc, shell in next dc, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, sk 1 dc, shell in next dc, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, sk 2 dc, shell in next dc, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, sk 1 dc, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp. Join rnd with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-ch. End off A.

Surface Crochet:

Line 2: With A, work one round surface crochet on the top of Rnd 5 as described in the Line 1 instructions above.

Line 3: If you are making only one square as part of a project, I would go ahead and add the C line on the top of Rnd 9. If it isn’t joined to anything you are essentially slip stitching. If you are making a bunch of the large ones to stitch into a project I would do the joint first, then go back and work a round of surface crochet on the top of Rnd 9.
