Finished Size: 12” square
Materials:
Worsted weight yarn (CYCA 4, Medium) in two colors. Model shown in Berroco Vintage (52% acrylic/40% wool/8% nylon; 100g; 218 yds), 1 skein Jalapeño (A) and 1 skein Okra (B)
Crochet hook size J/6.00mm or size needed to obtain gauge
Yarn needle
Notes:
Ch-3 at beg of row counts as 1 dc. You may also consider a standing dc, stacked sc, or recessed ch-3 (what I did – see video below) for neater side edges.
You can add additional rounds of sc around the outside border if you stitch more tightly than I do.

First Half:
With A, ch 41.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 40 sc
First Strip:
Row 1 (RS): Sc in each of next 8 sc, leave remaining sts unworked. Ch 3, turn (see Note). 8 sc
Row 2 (WS): Dc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in each dc across. Ch 3, turn.
Rows 4 – 25: Rep Rows 2 – 3 eleven times. End off after Row 25.
Strips 2 – 5:
With RS facing, rep instructions for First Strip, beginning in the first empty sc after the last st of the previous strip.
Do NOT end off after Strip 5.
Final Row:
At the end of Row 25 of the Fifth Strip, ch 1, turn.
Sc across the top of each strip in order. End off.

Second Half:
With B, rep all instructions for First Half EXCEPT for the Final Row.
Hold Second Half with the strips running left to right and First Half at a right angle with strips running bottom to top, and weave each strip B in an under/over pattern as shown in the photo.
Beginning at the top right corner of the woven square, with B, sc across the top of all of the B strips in order. Do not end off.
Border:
Continuing on with B, work 1 rnd sc around assembled square, working only through top or bottom of strips, placing three sc through both layers only at each corner to keep the work flat.
If needed, you can add additional sc rounds, just make sure to continue placing 3 sc in each corner sc.
Weave in all ends.

I need some help. I’m a little confused with strip five at the end of row 25 to chain one and turn and crochet across the top of all the strips which leaves the fifth strip short one row of single crochet. Can you clarify please?
The next stitch you make is a single crochet, thus the chain 1 and turn. You will work across the top row of all the strips to join them (on the first half)
