Easiest Knit Christmas Tree Ornament – no Purling!

This is the easiest knit Christmas ornament you will ever make! Some clever folding and a few embellishments turn a simple knit garter stitch square into an adorable Christmas Tree.

Now this pattern is more of a recipe than a specific pattern – and it is very, very forgiving 🙂 Essentially all you need to do is knit a garter stitch square then follow along to see how to assemble and embellish it. Gauge, yarn weight, size – it can all be vibes! I am writing out the pattern the way I did the one in the video but really, whatever you come up with will work just fine.

Materials:

Small amount worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver in Medium Thyme

Knitting needles size 9 or size needed for a pleasing fabric. Gauge is not critical for this pattern

Yarn needle

Felt for tree trunk. I used wool felt from Loops & Threads but acrylic felt works fine too.

Embellishments – I used buttons from Flair Originals but you can use any kind of button, bead or ribbon that suits your fancy. In the video I recommend beads in the 5.5mm – 6.0mm range for my tree but again, whatever makes you happy will work.

Needle and thread to sew on embellishments OR glue works just fine!

Square: Mine was about 5” square

Cast on 20 sts leaving a long tail for sewing.

Knit in garter stitch until your work is square (in my case 32 rows), bind off knitwise, leaving a second long tail for sewing.

Seaming:

Fold your square so one side edge meets one top or bottom edge, whip stitch into place.

Tuck the bottom point up inside the tree and use the remaining tails to stitch across the bottom.

Trim a piece of brown felt about 1 1/2” x 1”. Stitch or glue into place for the trunk, centered on the bottom seam.

Add hanger loop of matching yarn at the top of the tree (see video for a quick way to do that!)

Embellishments:

Go crazy! Stitch or glue a button into place at the top of the tree as I did, or use beads, buttons, or bows made of yarn or ribbon to decorate your tree. You can sew on or glue on as many or as few embellishments as you like.

I hope you enjoy making these! They are a great use of scrap yarn as well!
