Tunisian Full Stitch Headband/Ear Warmer – 3 Finishing Styles | Crochet Tutorial

In this week’s Tunisian Tuesday post we are exploring the Tunisian Full Stitch with three cute headbands/ear warmers to make. This goes to show you can use any weight yarn in any color, with one of three finishes, to get a final project you will love.

Finished Size: Completely adjustable depending on what you would like.

Materials:

Also super easy to customize but for the models I used:

Mustard – Simply Me Merino (CYCA 3) with a 7.00mm Tunisian hook and a 6.5mm traditional hook for the border

Gray – Simply Me Luster (CYCA 4) with an 8.00mm Tunisian hook and a 6.5mm traditional hook for the border

Pink – Simply Me (CYCA 5) with a 10.00mm Tunisian hook and an 8.00mm traditional hook for the border

A blunt yarn or tapestry needle for finishing.

Headband:

With traditional crochet hook chain 13 (11 for bulky or larger).

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn work (this is the only time you will!)

Row 2 forward: Sk 1st sc, *insert hook in next sc, yo, draw up a loop and leave the loop on the hook. Rep from * across. 12 loops on hook (10 for bulky or larger)

Row 2 and all remaining rows return: Yo, draw through 1 loop on hook, *yo, draw through 2 loops on hook. Rep from * across until only 1 loop remains on hook.

Row 3 forward: *Insert hook in gap before next vertical bar, yo and draw up a loop. Rep from * until one stitch remains, skip that gap, edge stitch in last stitch. 12 loops on hook

Row 4 forward: Skip first gap before next vertical bar, *insert hook before next vertical bar, yo and draw up a loop. Rep from * to end, edge stitch in last stitch. 12 loops on hook

Rep Rows 3 – 4 for pattern until work measures about 20″ or desired length, noting that the fabric is a little stretchy.

Border:

Switch to a traditional crochet hook, sc all the way around the piece working 3 sc in each corner, 1 sc in each gap across final Tunisian row, 1 sc in each row on each long side, and 1 sc in each sc of first Row. Join rnd with sl st, end off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Finish one: The Twist (C-seam)

With wrong sides out and right sides facing each other, fold each short side in half. The one on your left will look like the letter C, the one on your right like a backwards letter C. Insert the right piece into the left piece as shown in the video. Whip stitch closed through all four layers and turn right side out.

Finish two: The Ribbon

Whip stitch the two short sides together so they lay flat.

With the appropriate traditional crochet hook, ch 6.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 5 sc

Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Rep Row 2 until work measures approximately 3″ long on desired height, end off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Stitch ribbon into a loop, covering the whip stitch seam, and taking a tack stitch through the center to keep the ribbon from shifting before ending off and weaving in the end.

Finish Three: Gathered and Wrapped

Whip stitch the two short sides together so they lay flat. Before you end off your yarn tail, run it up and down through the center of the seam taking big running stitches, and pull tight to gather. Either end off now, or wrap the extra yarn around your gathers for additional visual detail.
