Cute Granny Square Earbud Case

It is SO easy to turn a granny square into a cute little case for earbuds, AirPods, or any other small trinkets you need to travel with. I made this one between flights on my way to Houston last week so I am sure you can make one in under an hour!

Finished size: Approximately 4” wide x 3” tall

Materials:

Small amounts DK weight yarn (CYCA 3, Light) – I used Caron Simply Me Merino in the Turquoise Sea colorway

Crochet hook size 7/4.5mm or size needed for a nice solid fabric. Gauge is not critical for this pattern

1 5/8” button. Model shown in Small Quilt Hearts button from Sarah Hearts, available on Etsy.

Tapestry needle

You can also use a worsted weight (CYCA 4, Medium) yarn with an appropriate hook and make a four round granny square instead of five!

Abbreviatons:

Beg – beginning

Ch – chain

Dc – double crochet

Rep – repeat

Rnd – round

Sc – single crochet

Sl st – slip stitch

Granny Square:

Ch 4. Join into ring with sl st in first ch.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, sc in ring, ch 2, (3 dc in ring, ch 2) 3 times. Join rnd with sl st in top of beg-ch-3. 12 dc + 4 ch-2 sps

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (OR make a standing dc – see video), dc in each of next 2 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch-2 sp, [dc in each of next 3 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times. Join rnd with sl st in first dc. 28 dc + 4 ch-2 sps

Rnds 3 – 5: Ch 3 (or make a standing dc), [dc in each dc to corner ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch-2 sp] 4 times, dc in each dc to end of rnd. Join rnd with sl st in first dc. Each rnd has 16 more dc, 4 on each side, than the previous rnd.

Do NOT fasten off!

Weave in center end.

With wrong side facing up, orient the square in a diamond orientation with the working yarn in the middle of the bottom right angled side.

Continuing on with the working yarn, fold the right side point and bottom point towards the center and seam the bottom of the right point together with the right side of the bottom point with a single crochet, matching double crochet to double crochet.

When you get to the corner space, single crochet through both pieces and ch 5 or the number of chains you need to get comfortably around your chosen button.

Fold the left point in towards the center, sc through the corner space of the bottom point and left point. Finish the seam by joining the bottom of the left point to the left side of the bottom point with single crochets, lining up the double crochets on each side. Fasten off and weave in that end.

Tuck the top of the envelope into the bottom and mark where the button should go – for mine it was at the bottom of Round 4. Stitch the button unto place and weave in those ends.

Optional: Attach yarn to either top corner and make a chain about 10” long, join it to the same top corner to form a long loop. You can use this loop to attach your case to your purse or tote bag handle so your earbuds don’t get lost in the bottom!
