If you saw me on Hochanda TV on one of my two appearances in the last year, you may have seen this versatile hat, made in Zen Yarn Garden Serenity Worsted.
One of the things I appreciate about that reversible cable brim is that it can be worn two ways – as above, with the brim turned up for a closer fit, and as shown below with the brim folded down for more of a slouchy fit.
It can also be knit two ways! I have been told that UK stitchers tend to knit on straight needles more, and US knitters tend to knit more on circulars. The brim must be knit in rows, but after you’ve picked up the stitches for the garter stitch body of the hat, you can work in rounds OR rows.

Turn work 90 degrees clockwise and pick up 88 sts.
At this point you can either work straight or in the round – your choice!
Work in garter st (k every row if straight, alternate k rnds and p rnds if in the round) until work measures 8.25”/21 cm from lower edge of brim, slightly stretched, ending with a WS row/rnd and decreasing 4 sts evenly spaced on last row/rnd. 84 sts

Row/Rnd 9: (K1, k2tog) 12 times. 24 sts
Row/Rnd 11: K2tog 12 times. 12 sts
Cut yarn after working Row/Rnd 12, leaving a long tail for finishing.
Thread tail into tapestry needle, use needle to go through all 12 remaining sts and pull tightly to close the top. If you’ve knit in the round, fasten off the yarn. If you have knit straight, use the remaining length of the tail to sew up the seam on the garter stitch section.
Sew beginning of cable to end of cable, perhaps with the wrong side facing you if you will want to flip up the brim.
Weave in all ends.
