Honestly I don’t know what possessed me! Perhaps it was the many long hours I have spent in the last few weeks sewing face masks, which certainly meant I was spending a lot of quality time with my rotary cutter. But when I was gently reminded it was my time to participate in the CAL Central 2020 Softie Crochet A Long, Roy was born.
Finished Size:
19 ½” tall x 5 ½” wide at widest part, stuffed
For a smaller softie, you can use a lighter weight yarn and appropriately sized crochet hook.
Materials:
Lion Brand Yarns Color Made Easy (CYCA 5, Bulky, 100% acrylic), 1 skein each #158 Turmeric (MC) and #153 Caviar (CC1)
Lion Brand Yarns Basic Stitch (CYCA 4, Medium, 100% acrylic), 1 skein #404 Silver Heather (CC2, held double)
Small amount red or pink for smile embroidery
Crochet hook size K/10 1/2/6.50mm or size needed to obtain gauge
Two 12mm safety eyes
2 small scraps of white felt
Stitch marker
Straight pins
PolyFil Premium from Fairfield
Gauge:
11 sts x 12 rows = 4” in sc with MC or CC1
Notes:
All pieces are worked in the round with no round joins or chains at beginning of rounds. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round so you don’t get lost.
CC2 is always held double
Handle:
Begin with a magic loop (preferred) or ch 3, join into a ring with sl st in first ch.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in ring. Make sure to mark 1st st of rnd from here on out. 6 sc
Rnd 2: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc) twice. 10 sc
Rnd 3: Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in next sc. 14 sc
Rnd 4: Sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 5 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 2 sc. 18 sc
Rnd 5: Sc in each of next 4 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 7 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 3 sc. 22 sc
Work even until 12” from start
Increase:
Rnd 1: (2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 9 sc) twice. 26 sc
Rnd 2: Sc in next sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 11 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 10 sc. 30 sc
Rnd 3: Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 13 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 11 sc. 34 sc
Rnd 4: Sc in each sc around. End off leaving a long tail for seaming the top.
Circle:
The following is a basic circle pattern. The next set of instructions will tell you specifically how to make the circular parts of Roy.
Begin with a magic loop (preferred) or ch 3, join into a ring with sl st in first ch.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in ring. Make sure to mark 1st st of rnd from here on out. 6 sc
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. 12 sc
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 18 sc
Rnd 4: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc. Rep from * around. 24 sc
Rnd 5: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 3 sc. Rep from * around. 30 sc
Rnd 6: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 4 sc. Rep from * around. 36 sc
Rnd 7: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 5 sc. Rep from * around. 42 sc
Rnd 8: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 6 sc. Rep from * around. 48 sc
Rnd 9: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 7 sc. Rep from * around. 54 sc
Face:
With CC1, work Rnds 1 – 4 of Circle. Fasten off leaving a very long tail to seam with.
Back:
With CC1, work Rnds 1 – 9 of Circle. Fasten off.
Blade:
With CC2 (yarn held double), work Rnds 1 – 8 of Circle. Fasten off.
Front Details:
With CC1, join yarn with a sc in any stitch of last rnd of Blade. I like to do it between the existing increases to make the shape a little more round and the increase lines a little less pointy.
Work Rnd 9 of Circle. Ch 1, turn to begin working in rows.
Row 1: Sc in each of next 5 sc. Ch 1, turn, leaving remaining sts unworked. 5 sc
Rows 2 – 5: Sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 6: Sc in next sc. Ch 1, turn leaving remaining sts unworked. 1 sc
Rows 7 – 9: Sc in next sc. Ch 1, turn. Turn, do not turn ch 1, fasten off after Row 9.
Row 10: Join yarn with a sc in first sc. Ch 1, turn. 1 sc
Rows 11 – 13: Sc in next sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 14: Sc in first sc, ch 3, sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 2 sc + ch-3 sp
Row 15: Sc in first sc, 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 5 sc
Row 16: Sc in each sc across. Fasten off. 5 sc
Finishing:
Trim 2 bits of felt to make circles just larger than the safety eye. Make a hole in the center of the felt, push the safety eye points through the felt and through the Face piece and attach.
Use scrap of pink or red yarn to embroider the smile as shown in photo, using a back stitch.
Center Face piece over Blade piece, making sure the face is aligned with the front detail that will go straight down, and slip stitch the Face to the Blade.
Slip Stitch the Blade to the Back, leaving the Front Detail open as well as 6 sc on either side of the Detail. Stuff assembled Blade and set aside.
Stuff handle and sew closed with a whip stitch.
Insert top of Handle into the Blade opening, align Front Detail into place, and pin.
Sew Blade to Handle, and tack down Detail, with a whip stitch.
Weave in ends and enjoy!
