Mossy Stripey Square

This Mossy Stripey Square is just what it says it is – an interesting moss stitch crochet square for afghans blankets or throws, with stripes going off in two directions.

Finished Size: 6” square for part one, 12” square for both parts

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn (CYCA 4, Medium) in two colors. Model shown in Patons Classic Wool Worsted (100% pure new wool; 100g; 194 yds) in Dark Green (A), and Basil (B)

Crochet hook size I/9/5.5mm or size needed to obtain gauge

Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:

Beg – beginning

Ch – chain

Rep – repeat

Sc – single crochet

Sl st – slip stitch

Sp(s)- space(s)

Square:

With A ch 22.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 21 sc

Row 2: Sc in first sc, *ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc. Rep from * to end. Change to B, ch 1, turn. 11 sc + 10 ch-1 sps

Row 3: With B, sc in first sc and in first ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to last sc, sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 12 sc + 9 ch-1 sps

Row 4: Sc in first sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to end. Change to A, ch 1, turn. 11 sc + 10 ch-1 sps

Row 5: With A, sc in first sc and in first ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to last sc, sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 12 sc + 9 ch-1 sps

Row 6: Sc in first sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to end. Change to B, ch 1, turn. 11 sc + 10 ch-1 sps

Rows 7 – 21: Rep Rows 3 – 6 three times then Rows 3 – 5 once more.

Row 22: Sc in each sc and ch-1 sp across.

FOR 6” SQUARE ONLY:
End off B, continuing on with A work 1 rnd sc, placing 1 sc in each sc, 1 sc in the side of each row, and 3 sc in each corner so the square lays flat.

End off, weave in ends, block.

FOR 12” SQUARE:

Continuing on at the end of Row 22 work 3 sc total in the last st of the row (corner made), continuing up the side work 1 sc in the side of each row. Ch 1, turn. 43 sc

Row 23: Sc in first sc, (ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc) 10 times, 3 sc in next sc, place marker in center sc of those 3, sc in next sc, (ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc) 10 times. Change to B, ch 1, turn. 25 sc + 20 ch-1 sps

Row 24:  With B, sc in first sc and first ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to last ch-1 sp before corner, ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc,  3 sc in marked sc, move marker to center sc of those 3, sc in next sc, ** ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from ** to end, sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 27 sc + 20 ch-1 sps

Row 25: Sc in first sc, *ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to last ch-1 sp before corner, ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc, 3 sc in marked sc, move marker to center sc of those 3, sc in next sc, **ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from ** to last 2 sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in last sc. Change to A, ch 1, turn. 27 sc + 22 ch-1 sps

Row 26: With A, Rep Row 24. 29 sc + 22 ch-1 sps

Row 27: With A, Rep Row 25. Change to B at end of Row. 29 sc + 24 ch-1 sps

Row 28 – 42: Rep Rows 24 – 27 three times then Rows 24 – 26 once more.

Edging:

End off B, continuing on with A work 1 rnd sc, placing 1 sc in each sc, 1 sc in the side of each row, and 3 sc in each corner so the square lays flat.

End off, weave in ends, block.
