This V-neck cotton tank top is really easy to knit – it’s a two row repeat! Knit from the bottom up in two pieces with side seams for stability, it’s perfect on its own, or layered under an open oversized shirt for cooler weather.

Thanks as always to Yarnia in Montclair NJ for allowing us to shoot there, and just for generally being awesome. I purchased the yarn for this top at Yarnia.
So this pattern has the size XS free on the blog because that is the size I knit for the model and shot for the video. As the rebrand continues and I experiment with how I produce and monetize designs, some patterns will be free, some will be paid, and some will have this model with one size free and the rest paid. I promise faithfully it won’t always be the small size that is free! I will switch it up as I get in my groove, but for this week this was the best option.

Finished Sizes: ONLY XS ON THE BLOG
XS (S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X) = finished bust of 32 (36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56)”
Garment Length is 11 (11, 12, 12, 13, 13, 13)” at the side seam but that is easily modified by knitting more or fewer rows.
Materials:
500 (500, 1000, 1000, 1000, 1000, 1500) yds worsted weight cotton yarn. Model shown in 2 (2, 4, 4, 4, 4, 6) skeins of Juniper Moon Farm Cumulus Rainbow (94% Israel Mako Cotton/6% polyamide; 100g; 251 yds) in #229 Total Eclipse Please see note below about color continuity.
Knitting needles size 7/4.5mm or size needed to obtain gauge
Tapestry needle
Optional: 2 DPNS size 7/4.5mm to knit the i-cord, or you could use your circular needle if that is what you used to knit the body
Gauge: 16 sts x 22 rows = 4” in plain stockinette stitch. Note that the majority of stitches in this top are angled so if you are making modifications on your own you will have to take that into consideration!
Note on Yarn Choices:
Juniper Moon Farm Cumulus Rainbow is what I used for the sample. I used two skeins and knit each side from the outside of the skein in so even though the garment is seamed the “rainbow” more or less matches. I didn’t get all the way through the color range on the XS, you will for the S. When you get to the M and up you would not necessarily need 4 skeins from the perspective of yardage but you would if you want the rainbow to match all the way up – you would need to add a skein to the front and another to the back at the same point in the gradient. If you are NOT using a gradient yarn you could get away with lower yardage than stated on sizes M, L and 3X

Abbreviations:
K – knit
K2tog – knit 2 together, a right-leaning decrease
M1L – make 1 left, a left-leaning increase
M1R – make 1 right, a right-leaning increase
P – purl
Rep – repeat
Ssk – slip, slip, knit, a left-leaning decrease
St(s) – stitch(es)
Special Stitches:
M1L – insert your left-hand needle tip from front to back under the top horizontal strand between the needles, knit that bar through the back loop.
M1R – insert your left-hand needle tip from back to front under the top horizontal strand between the needles, knit that bar.
Ssk – sl each of the next 2 sts knitwise, slip them back to the left-hand needle, k2tog through back loop
Note:
Because cotton yarn does not have a ton of elasticity, it is important when knitting the “M1R, k1, M1L” sequences at the upper points to knit those stitches loosely.
Front/Back: Make 2
Cast on 84 sts with a long-tail cast-on.
Row 1, 3, 5 (WS): Knit.
Row 2 and all remaining RS rows: K 9, [k2tog, k 14, M1R, k1, M1L, k 14, ssk] twice, k 9 .
Row 7 and remaining WS rows until upper edging: Purl.
Rep RS row and purl row until work measures 10” from cast-on edge, or 1” less than desired length, ending with a RS row.
Upper Edging:
Rep Rows 1 – 5. Bind off knitwise.
Straps: Make 2:
Using DPNS or circular needle work a 3-stitch I-cord as follows.
Cast on 3 sts, leaving a long tail for sewing.
*Slide work to right hand side of right-hand needle. Bringing working yarn across the back of the work, k3. Rep from * until each strap measures 11” from cast-on edge or desired length. End off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Assembly:
Using a tapestry needle and mattress stitch, sew up each side seam.
Using a tapestry needle and the tails from the I-cord, stitch each I-cord strap on the inside of each upper point, letting the point overlap the strap by about ½”
Weave in ends. Block if desired.
